Hans E. Riefkohl Hernández
Founder & Managing Member
Big-Firm Experience. Small-Firm Attention. Zero Hourly Billing.
Hans brings a rare combination of financial acumen and legal sophistication to every engagement. Licensed to practice in Puerto Rico, Washington, D.C., the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, he draws on more than a decade of experience across accounting, corporate transactions, government contracting, and complex litigation to deliver counsel that is both commercially grounded and strategically precise.
Before entering the legal profession, Hans earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and Finance, cum laude, from Villanova University and spent time at Deloitte in Philadelphia, where he learned to read financial statements, evaluate internal controls, and identify the factors that determine whether a company thrives or fails. He also served as a notary public—a credential that carries particular weight in Puerto Rico’s civil law tradition, where notarial authority underpins the most consequential business and estate transactions.
Hans earned his Juris Doctor summa cum laude from the University of Puerto Rico School of Law. He then clerked for Chief Justice Maite D. Oronoz Rodríguez at the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico and for Judge Gustavo A. Gelpí at the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico—experiences that gave him firsthand insight into how judges evaluate arguments, weigh evidence, and decide cases.
From there, Hans moved to the deal side. As a Corporate Associate at DLA Piper, he advised on public-private partnerships, cross-border transactions, and government contracting across multiple jurisdictions. At Marini Pietrantoni Muñiz—one of Puerto Rico’s premier law firms—he handled complex commercial litigation. And as Lead Transactions Counsel for LUMA Energy, he managed the legal framework behind Puerto Rico’s power grid, negotiating contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars and navigating the federal funding requirements that followed Hurricane Maria.
In 2022, Hans founded Riefkohl LLC to offer the caliber of legal work typically reserved for large institutional firms—without the overhead, inefficiency, or hourly billing that comes with them. His practice covers the full spectrum of business law: entity formation, mergers and acquisitions, financing and capital transactions, commercial real estate, operating agreements, vendor contracts, and succession planning. He also advises on estate planning, tax matters, bankruptcy, and government procurement—bringing the same rigor and business judgment to every matter.
What distinguishes Hans is his ability to see a transaction from every angle. He has audited companies, so he knows what investors and lenders scrutinize. He has advised on government contracts and public procurement, so he understands the regulatory landscape. He has handled restructurings and creditors’ rights, so he knows how to build agreements that hold up when circumstances change. That breadth of experience translates into counsel that is practical, anticipatory, and focused on outcomes.
His clients include entrepreneurs launching their first venture, established businesses pursuing strategic acquisitions, investors entering the Puerto Rico market, and families seeking to protect and transfer wealth across generations. Whether the matter involves a complex merger, a commercial lease, an Act 60 structure, or a trust and estate plan, Hans approaches each engagement with the same conviction: legal work should advance your objectives, not stand in the way of them.
Today, from his San Juan office, Hans continues to build a practice defined by intellectual rigor, personal attention, and a relentless focus on helping Puerto Rico’s business community compete, grow, and thrive.
